Tip-Toeing up the Tripyramids : North & Middle Tripyramid

Date of Hike: 2/13/14

Pine Bend Brook Trail / Mount Tripyramid Trail: 9.75 miles (3,425 feet elevation gained)

Trip Report:
- Friday was another sub zero and breezy morning in the White Mountains.  We played it safe by staying well below treeline by heading up the Tripyramids via the Pine Bend Brook Trail,
- The Pine Bend Brook Trail leaves the Kancamagus highway and travels over parts of the old Swift River railroad.  It meanders through the woods over easy grades crossing the Pine Bend Brook a few times as it makes its way to the Sandwich Range Wilderness boundary.
- After the Wilderness boundary is where the really hiking begins, the trail gains the ridge between North Tripyramid and Scaur Peak at a ridiculously steep rate.
- Luckily for us there was one lone hiker ahead of us who broke out the entire trail, it was Bob, who Whitney and I had met on an autumn day descending Mount Nancy.  Thank you Bob for being awesome!!
- Even with the trail broken it kicked both of our asses as we had a helluva time gaining the ridge.  Once we reached where the junction of the Scaur Ridge Trail is supposed to be, we couldn't find the sign, it was either buried beneath the snow or trail breaking Bob just took a short cut and bypassed it, we slowly made our way up to Middle Tripyramid.
- From here we did a down-up-down-up over to Middle peak and back.  It's one of the easier between peak hikes of the 4,000 footer list, as it's short and pretty straight forward.
- The descent back to the car went much quicker than the ascent.  Whitney and I butt sledded down the steep spots as we made our way back to the wilderness boundary.  From there we made our way back through the pine groves over the old railroad grades until we made it back to the Kanc just before 1pm.
- It was a chilly/windy hike and it was slow going at times, but we made the best of it and it definitely beats being in an office!

The Pine Bend Brook Trail leaves the Kanc and heads over level and easy grade to the Sandwich Wilderness
It crosses the brook a few times through pine and hardwoods
After the wilderness boundary it starts to head up...
and becomes relentlessly steep
Once it gains the ridge the trail has moderate grades followed by a steep burst before the summit
There was plenty of snow on the trails especially between North and Middle peaks
Mount Tecumseh and Waterville Valley as seen from Middle Tripyramid
Mount Carrigain (left), Mount Passaconaway and Chocorua (top right), and the Osceolas (lowe right)
Heading back down the Pine Bend Brook Trail
 Lot's of snow piling up!
 Back to the Kanc!

North and Middle Tripyramid (#10 & #11)

Date of Hike: 1/17/10

Pine Bend Brook Trail: 4.5 miles
Mount Tripyramid Trail: .6 miles
Pine Bend Brook Trail: 4.5 miles
Total Miles: 9.6 (3,450 elevation gain)

Trip Report:
- On trail at 7:45am, finished at 12:15pm, temps in the mid 20's, no wind, cloudy day with no views
- Wore snowshoes the whole day, trail was well packed
- Pine Bend Brook Trail "is what it is." The trail follows a brook and bends around a forest full of pine trees
- The trail is pretty level until you enter the Sandwich Range Wilderness then it becomes steep to very steep near the top
- Didn't see anyone until came across a group of eight guys at the Scaur Ridge trail junction when I was descending.  Saw five more people around the Sandwich Range boundry
-  When I finished the hike I went online to check tomorrow's forecast on Mount Washington which will be a waste of a day but I noticed todays forecast for the summit had changed since last night and was in the clear with an undercast.  If I had known this in the morning I would have hiked in Mount Washington!

Middle Tripyramid Summit

Pine Bend Brook Trail

Middle Tripyramid Mountain (4,140 feet)

Tripyramids from Waterville Valley Ski Slopes

The Tripyramids are located in the Sandwich Wilderness and of the three summits two of them are official 4,000 footers (North and Middle).  The summits are wooded although Middle Tripyramid has two decent outlooks on the summit.  There are a couple of different hiking options to reach the summits, from Route 112 (Kancamagus highway) you can take the Sabbaday Brook and Pine Bend Brook  trails which are pretty tame and in the woods the whole way.  From Waterville Valley - Tripoli Road - Livermore Trailhead you can hike a loop via the Livermore Trail to the Mount Tripyramid Trail through steeper, tougher, and more fun North and South Slides and take in the magnificent views while climbing up and down the slides!

Trails I've Hiked

-Livermore / Mount Tripyramid Trail: 4.8 miles, elevation gain of 2,600 feet to North Tripyramid. 6.8 miles elevation gain of 3,000 feet. Loop over the Tripyramids and back 11.0 miles, elevation gain of 3,000 feet. The Livermore trail is basically old logging roads with great footing and almost level walking. The Mount Tripyramid Trail makes a loop over all three summits back to the Livermore trail. The trail has moderate grades below the slides with ok footing. The slides are steep with awful footing but the views are incredible. The North Slide is more open and more challenging and is easier to ascend than descend. Experienced hikers will love this as it's pretty steep over slabs then loose boulders and scree. The South Slide is not as open but easier to navigate (although more loose) as it's mostly crushed rocks and gravel. The hike along the ridge between the three peaks has easy and moderate grades but is in the woods with no views. Caution should be used on the slides, which can be dangerous when wet and icy or unnerving even when dry for inexperienced hikers. The Livermore trailhead is located on Tripoli Road near the Waterville Valley Ski Area.

-Pine Bend Brook / Mount Tripyramid Trail: 4.0 miles, elevation gain of 2,800 feet to North Tripyramid. 4.8 miles, elevation gain of 3,200 feet to Middle Tripyramid. The Pine Bend Brook Trail is in the woods with no views. The trail has easy grades with decent footing until reaching the Sandwich Wilderness boundary where the trail soon becomes steep and the footing becomes rough until reaching the junction of the the Scaur Ridge Trail where the grades become easier until the final pitch up to the summit of North Tripyramid over minor scrambles over ledges that are usually wet. Continue on the Mount Tripyramid Trail to Middle Tripyramid with a moderate descent and ascent in the woods along the ridge with ok footing.
