Galehead from North Twin Summit
Galehead Mountain might possibly be the most boring mountain of all the 4,000 footers as it is a completely wooded summit lying like a small lump as South Twin towers above it. However the Galehead Hut is located just .5 miles from the summit and usually has cookies or coffee cake slices you can get for a buck! The hut is great spot for families to hike to and has very yummy dinner and breakfast for those who spend the night! There are two trails that lead to the Frost Trail which is just below the summit. The Gale River Trail from Gale River Road and the Twin Brook Trail located deep in the Pemigewasset Wilderness at Thirteen Falls Campsite.
Trails I've Hiked:
-Gale River Trail/Garfield Ridge Trail/Frost Trail: 5.2 miles (elevation gain of 2,500 feet): 4.0 miles, elevation gain of 1,800 feet. The Gale River trail is the fastest route to Galehead Hut and the summit of Galehead Mountain. The trail has easy to moderate grades with good but muddy footing in spots at times until the last mile where it becomes steeper with rougher footing. The trail crosses the Gale River twice which can be difficult in high water since the bridges have been washed away. From the end of the Gale River Trail take the Garfield Ridge Trail .6 miles to the Galehead Hut (elevation gain of 400 feet) it has moderate to semi steep grades with rough footing. From the hut take the Frost Trail .5 miles (elevation gain of 250 feet) over moderate grades with ok footing to the completely wooded summit. There is an outlook below the summit with fine views back to Galehead Hut and up to the Twin range.
