Mount Carrigain (4,700 feet)

Mount Carrigain and Carrigain Notch from Twinway Outlook

Mount Carrigain, long ago referred to as 'The Prince of the Wilderness' sits on the edge of the Pemigewassit Wilderness and commands one of the most spectacular views from its observation tower.  On a clear day almost every 4,000 foot summit can be seen from the tower.  There is one direct trail to the summit via the Signal Ridge Trail (5.0 miles, elevation gain of 3,250 feet). The trail has moderate grades with ok to rough and rugged footing as it gains the Signal Ridge. Views from Signal Ridge and the summit observation tower of the White Mountains are tremendous.  In the late fall, winter, and early spring Sawyer River Road is closed.  During this time you can park at the lot off Route 302 and hike 2 miles (elevation gain of 600 feet) to the trailhead.  For a more challenging, scenic, and secluded approach hike through Carrigain Notch and ascend via the Desolation Trail, which has a one mile stretch that is as steep and rugged as any trail in the White Mountains. (8.5 miles, elevation gain of 3,300 feet)
