Flume & Liberty

Date of Hike: 11/3/15

Pemi Bike Path & Basin Bushwhack: 0.8 miles  /  Liberty Springs Trail: 0.25 miles  /  Flume Slide Trail: 3.3 miles  /  Franconia Ridge Trail: 1.4 miles  /  Liberty Springs Trail: 2.3 miles  /  Basin Bushwhack  & Pemi Bike Path: 0.8 miles
Total Miles: 8.9 miles (3,642 feet elevation gained) Garmin Forerunner 910XT

After a few tenths of a mile along the Pemi Bike Path we duck into the woods and hook onto an old haul road AKA the Basin Bushwhack

The first two miles of the Flume Slide Trail travels through a nice open hardwood forest with easy grades

The woods transitions to pine and eventually we hit the bottom of the steep and wet Flume Slide

The Flume Slide Trail is a steep 'in the woods' slide lacking the big views of say the slides on the Tripyramids or even Owl's Head

Mount Liberty as seen from the summit ledges of Mount Flume

Looking north at the Franconia Ridge with Mount Liberty, Lincoln, and Lafayette in view

From Mount Flume there is a nice view into the Pemi Wilderness north to Mount Garfield (bottom), and east to Hellgate Ravine and the three Bonds (top)

View of the northern end of Franconia Notch from Mount Liberty (Cannon on the left, Lincoln and Lafayette on the right)

Heading down the Liberty Springs Trail.  The lower end, pictured here, is a nice hike, the top of the trail however is kind of dull, hence not pictured.

The Pemi Bike Path on a very mild and nice November day!

Signs spotted along the way

  1. Thanks for bringing back the memories - did that hike a long time ago after only doing Cannon and Hale as a newbie. I had no clue what I was getting into. My husband said it's a great loop ! Well, we did it, I actually enjoyed it, but was somewhat scared and could not walk for days after that ! Still kept hiking though, but it prompted me to start doing extensive research before hikes :) - Wendy

    1. Wendy that sounds like quite the thrill ride! It definitely packs quite the punch going in blind, must have been crazy heading up and thinking, boy this is steep and kind of sketchy, will this ever end!!!!???? Glad you guys will have that to look back on and chuckle for many years to come. My parents had a similar experience on it twenty years ago when they decided to descend it...how bad could this be??!! :P

    2. What cracks me up is that my husband hiked all the 48 with his Dad and brothers as 12-14 year olds. His memory of some of them is somewhat suspect.... I figured that out quick !
