Porter and Cascade: #4 & #5

Date of Hike: 12/24/13

Cascade / Porter Trail: 5.9 miles (2,250 feet elevation gained)

Trip Report:
- Christmas Eve I woke up early to do a quick hike before heading back to RI to spend time with my family over the Holidays.  As I was driving from Lake Placid to the Cascade / Porter Trailhead it was still dark out but for the first time since arriving I could see clear skies!  Unfortunately, there was a cloud blanketing the summits of Cascade and Porter.
- Cascade and Porter are the two easiest peaks on the Forty-Sixer list.  The trail is gradual and views from Cascade are excellent on a clear day.
- The temperature hovered around the low teens for the entire hike.  The Artic blast of cold air froze everything that had turned to slush over the previous three days.  The hiking was much easier because of this, and the dusting of snow from the night before made it feel a little more like winter out there.  However, the warm snap did do a number to the snow levels and the trails were more in mid fall conditions with some snow and ice blanketing the trail.
- When I reached the junction that heads up to Cascade's peak I decided to head over to Porter first just in case the views opened up so on the way back I'd have visibility from Cascade.  That didn't end up happening so I was in the clouds on both summits.
- The highlights of the hike was a couple of ice stretches heading into the Cascade / Porter col and the very windy exposed approach to Cascade's summit.
- I decided to jog down the mountain were I finally ran into other hikers.  A guy was out with his German Shepard and I saw two other hikers a few minutes from the trailhead.  They were all going to luck out as it looked like the cloud cover was about to clear.
- Back at the car I changed into warm clothes, watched as the spots along Route 73 filled up with cars as people went out to hike and had a brief conversation with another hiker about the trail conditions.
- I started my drive back to RI at 9:30 a.m. and as luck would have it the Great Range and the Giant Wilderness were in the clear and looked awesome as I drove through Keene Valley.  I remember when I finished my regular Forty-Sixer list that there was this great view of Giant Mountain from the Ausable Club, so I made a short detour off Route 73 up the road to the club to see Giant and take a picture before heading home to Lil' Rhody!
- It was a whacky first couple of days winter hiking.  I was zero for five for views, but the adventurous conditions made it an experience that was well worth it!

Cascade and Porter Mountain

Date of Hike: 9/8/12

Cascade Trail: 5.9 miles (2,250 elevation gain)

Trip Report:
- With awful afternoon weather predicted (high winds and heavy rains) Diaz and I decided to hike the easiest of the ADK 46R's, Cascade and Porter Mountain.
- By getting an early start we lucked out with the weather and had some decent but hazy views from Cascade Mountain as the wind whipped us around pretty good.  The wind was a sustained 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.  It was blowing so hard that the puddles on the rocks had waves!
- All the peaks over 4,500 feet were obscured in the clouds and must have been a nightmare to be hiking in but for us it was a lot of fun since we had clear views from both Cascade and Porter.
- We saw three other hikers while ascending and then about forty hikers while descending.  Cascade and Porter Mountains attract every kind of hiker, from new to old and on this day it was more new or 'newbie' hikers if you will than experienced but they were all enjoying the trail and probably had a thrilling/fun experience they would never forget on the final 0.3 miles exposed approach to Cascade Mountain in the high winds which just kept getting stronger.
- We finished our hike around 11am and it was time for us to part ways, Diaz heading back home down 87 to just north of the city, meanwhile I headed to Lake Placid to make a beer run for my dad (Yuengling unfortunately is not sold in New England, BOO!) before heading through the middle of nowhere but picturesque Vermont on my way to Alton's house in southern NH.
- It was a great two days hiking with my roommate from our days at Quinnipiac University and can't wait until next June when we get together for some more awesome hiking above 4,000 feet!

Cascade & Porter Mountains ( #15 & #16)

Date of Hike: 6/5/11

Cascade Trail: 5.9 miles (2,250 elevation gain)

Trip Report:
- After completing a one day Great Range Traverse the day before I made sure to take it very easy and do the easiest of the 46r's up Cascade and Porter mountains:
- The weather called for clouds and there were many but they were up high leaving some good views to be had from the summit of Cascade.
- The hike up the Cascade Trail was easy as there were no steep sections and the footing was by far the best out of my experiences so far in the ADK's.
- I took in the views from Cascade mountain for about ten minutes then headed over to Porter.  The views from Porter were decent but the bugs where flying around and becoming a nuisance so I only stayed a minute or two before heading back to the car.
- On the way out I must have past three dozen people, mostly families hiking up to Cascade enjoying a Sunday out on the trails.
